Choosing vocational education and training in construction or a related industry will help you reach your career goals.

Never before have we seen so many women take up a course in construction, manufacturing, electrotechnology (electrician), plumbing, transport and logistics. About 6,000 women have accessed funded training in construction or a related industry over the last 18 months.

Whether you’re a school leaver looking to pursue a career as an electrician or an employee looking to retrain as a construction worker – now is the perfect time to get started in this industry.

Part qualifications (short courses) are also available. If you’re interested in a short course, contact your nearest Training Services NSW office.

Fee-free training is funded by the NSW and Commonwealth governments.

How to access the training

  • Access useful training: gain skills and knowledge in work, health and safety and teamwork that can be used anywhere, across industries.
  • Develop your career: high rates of pay in an industry that is seeing phenomenal growth.
Loads of career opportunities

Trade industries are experiencing skills shortages, including:

  • electrical services
  • building and civil construction
  • traffic management
  • truck driving
  • warehouse operations and more!

NSW is focused on recovery. This is a great opportunity to get the required skills to kickstart your career in trades.

With a budget of over $110.4 billion over the next four years, there's lots of work available and ongoing in this industry.

You may be able to study a fee-free course in construction or a related industry if you are:
  • 15 years old or over
  • no longer at school
  • living or working in NSW
  • an Australian citizen, permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen.

You do not have to be working in construction or have previous industry experience to access fee-free full qualifications in construction or a related industry.

In addition, your eligibility is not affected if you have completed a vocational education and training (VET) course, including a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, as part of your high school education.

No matter who you are, Skills NSW makes it easier to access the training you need to enter this rewarding sector.

How long will it take to complete this qualification?

Short Course

All short courses are currently shown as under 4 months duration, based on the Department of Education's internal data analysis. Ask your provider for more information.

Qualification

Duration information is based on 20 hours of class time per week and uses aggregated data reported to the Department by Smart and Skilled providers.

Apprenticeships and Traineeships

The duration indicates contract term which includes both formal training and full-time employment under a training contract. This is based on aggregated data reported to the Department by Smart and Skilled providers.
